I am a retired 19K tanker. I still remember the nomenclature on the stub base of those Sabots--Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot Round w/Tracer.
Once we got the A2s, no one used the "gunner take over, driver move out" command anymore. They had us TCs say "driver move out". Gunnery was easy as shite once we could designate targets on the A2.

I missed the A2's by a couple years. They were just starting to come out by the time I was already off active duty and in the guard. The ironic thing is I actually got to see a column of A2s moving out to the range while I was back at Knox for BNOC. The only problem is it was Suadi tankers taking them out.

but I was told back in my day Armor was the combat arms branch to be in for officers who wanted to make general.
I think there is still an infantry bias, but those are the big 2 for producing generals. I know it isn't for MI - we've got like 3 in the whole damned army.

Mrs Cove's uncle was a tank officer. He convinced both of his sons to be Air Force pilots.

I think we got the A2s at Ft. Hood with the 1st CAV in 1998. They were night and day. The gunner didn't have to walk the reticle back on when there when inducing lead after hitting the laze. All you had to do was laze and blaze.
As far as funny fire commands go...I had to TCE (tank crew evaluate) the 49th Armored National Guard out of Texas. Holy hell. It was like "Come on Jim Bob, shoot. Shoot that shite."
Half of the tank crews got kicked off of the range for safety violations.

There's a joke in there about the oxymoron in the term MI. But I'm sure you've heard it a time or 20,000 by now.

I TCE'ed for the 31st Armor brigade (Alabama ARNG) on TTVIII once and those bastards were ate the frick up. They'd just transitioned over from 60's to M1IP's like a year before. It was a spectacle. That brigade had two armor battalions and didn't have even a full company worth of tank crews qualify.
