For a 13 year old:

1. Go to Willis Tower just because
2. Natural Science and Field Museum
3. Cubs game
4. Do Chicago water taxi to Chinatown (almost as good as the architectural tours and you go somewhere)
5. See some of the Transformers sites like Chicago River bridges (where you get water taxi) and see if they'll let you up Trump Tower
6. Eat Italian beef - dipped with sweet peppers - at Portillo's. If at the River North location, cut across the street to see the McDonald's - I think it's supposed to be the flagship McDonald's in all the world.
7. Eat pepporoni deep dish (not the buttercrust though) at Lou Malnati's
8. Walk down Michigan Ave maybe have a look in the Nike Store and get dessert at Gharedillis right by the Water Tower. It's way overpriced and not that good, but he's a kid and it will be fun.
9. Walk along the lake trail along Lake Michigan.

LOL! LOL! I've been to Chicago many times and never come close to feeling unsafe. I've walked around at 4AM by myself and never felt unsafe. If your an idiot and don't pay attention to where you are and go way to the west side then your getting robbed. I know a bunch of girls living in Chicago and only one of them has had something stolen and that was her phone.

As to what to do there that hasn't been mentioned:
The top of the Hancock Building has a bar/resturant that can be cool to go to but you can get some trashy people going up there too but i'd do that again in second.

The Chicago Art Institute was cool. I've been in some of the more famous art museums in the world and the Chicago Art Institute was better than a lot of them. They had a really cool section on Hindu and Buddhist art.

There are a bunch of breweries that could be fun to chill at. No age limit so you could take your son.

Everything else has been mentioned and I spent most of my time in Chicago drinking. I would not suggest riding the L train for the hell of it because I don't feel one ounce of safety riding that thing. It's a death trap. I'll ride if from point A-B but it feels like it's falling apart and there have been a few accidents that ended in death over the past few years. I also don't trust the taxi drivers at all. Use that taxi app. Oh, and I thought that the Pier was kind of a waste of time.

Oh, and Cubs is way better than White Sox. Just make sure you get good seats. I made the mistake of getting seats right next to the press box one time. I couldn't see the freaking batter. But they have TVs everywhere. I didn't understand the whole saying "there isn't a bad seat in the house" until I saw some of the bad seats there lol.

Just because something is a lot safer doesn't make it safe.
