When I lived in Thibodaux in the late 70's, the PD would rob your house while you were on vacation if you phoned to ask them to watch your house.

Again in the 70's, the Chief of Detectives crashed his unit into the City's huge power plant late one nite. He admitted that the reason was he was looking for flying saucers, as "it's a fact they circle around large power plants". He remained on the force for another 10_+ yrs.
