Anyone remember when and why it shut down?
I think it was gone by the early 90s. I can't remember exactly why Thunderbird Beach itself closed down, but it seems around that time the then-new DEQ shut down several river parks in the Florida Parishes for registering too high on their bacteria-count readings. Also around that time, people first started filing lawsuits if their kid got injured at one of those beaches/tubing places. T-bird Beach eventually got carved up into an upscale subdivision, and only a small section is still used by Tiki Tubing.

I'm pretty sure that the actual slide was about 80 feet higher.

As a T-Bird Beach lifeguard, we were pretty proud to complete the on-going training program. If you couldn't fold your mat properly and slide all the way across the pool by the end of summer, you were not asked to come back the next year.
