PS the easier way to make money is becoming an actuary. Those guys make bank. You need to have the brains though.

Why don't more young adults forego college and dive head first into it?
It's sales. It's a different type of grind and not everyone is made for that. Not everyone is successful either.
Cold-calling and hustling isn't my thing. It's not what I would have been happy doing.

My wife's hot cousin is an actuary. She makes good money. She's also really smart though. It's definitely an underrated career choice.

On you way where, exactly? There are more steps than this.
You mean being contracted? Of course. Joining a group is free as is adding various lines as you go. I'm kind of shocked by the responses so far. If you think the only insurance that exists is Geico, Progressive or State Farm you're way wrong. Big money wrong.

And a lack of emotion.

Not my primary career I just sell specific products on the side. Hardly the point of the thread, though. Being exposed to the industry like I have, it's pretty crazy money. Now, it's not for everyone... setting your own schedule and being your own boss is hard for some.
Are you selling some of that bullshite insurance run by some MLM company?

Are you? You made it sound as if it's easy to make a ton of money in insurance. What you meant is there are essentially zero barriers to entry.

Every year a different patient or patient's wife starts selling life insurance and wants everyone in the practice to buy from them.

How does one become an actuary?

My friends that sell insurance have secretaries that handle home owners and auto while they are out entertaining the big boys.

Man, you all do not like insurance people. There are some horrible producers out there that do not know what they are doing. There is also some really good agents who know what is going on. Seems you all deal with the bad producers who are just trying to make a dollar.
Riddle me this. Who is the second person you call after you realize your house has caught on fire? (hint: its the motherfricker you love to hate bringing you a check)

Umm, no.
I'll say this. Group plans through a brokerage offers varied plans to employees of companies. Yours for example. His. Hers. Theirs. Whomever. Do you think the brokers or their agents sit down with or call each and every FTE in the company to convince them to buy your products? No? How about a once a year click of the mouse to choose their options on their own time...
:lightbulb:
I guess they have to be your family and friends to buy.

Oh, you mean like a guy courting businesses between 50-1000 FTE? That type of friend?

Obtain a 4 year degree in Actuarial Science or Mathematics. Like engineering or accounting, and unlike underwriting, it's not a career you just fall into; you need to major in it.

I don't mind insurance agents too much. There's a fair share of sleaze balls, but they're no realtors. With that said I have zero interest in ever becoming one. Making cold calls and selling shite to friends and family sounds like a terrible existence to me. If you like it, more power to you, but I think I'd rather do manual labor.

Where do you guys get this idea it's an industry completely reliant on cold calling? Serious question. It makes no sense to me.

I feel the same way, which is why I work on the Company side of the business. I just don't have the sales type hustler personality. The guys who DO make it as agents do really well, though the amount that don't make it is pretty staggering. It's like 1 in 100 who makes it. Takes a few years before they finally throw in the towel though.

We don't hate insurance, just crappy insurance salesmen/women/people.
