I was a sailor I was borne upon the tide
And with the sea, I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still

Pardon me, but I believe most went through Nicaragua!
This sector of central America (focusing on Nicaragua) is blown up from the 1587 Urbano map (David Rumsey collection.) Strangely, there is already an interesting canal cut-through conspicuously in place from the Atlantic to the Pacific by that time. There are also many indications of already-named cities and places by 1587(!)
David Rumsey, Tavola XXII. Che Ha Sua Superiore La Tavola. XI. Libro Terzo.
Why would they hide this route and already-established civ from us?

Oregon trail.
Its 1850 though. Its not like most people were living much better in St Louis or wherever the frick civilization ended than they would be on the way to California. Diseases were plentiful, life was damned hard. It is difficult to imagine doing that trip today to all of us because we can't imagine a world where being hungry or cold is anything more than a nuisance that we will remedy in a short while. A sizeable number of Americans in 1850 lived about the same way in Ohio or Georgia as they would on the way to California....
It always amazed me the shite they would take with them. There is ample evidence of them transporting pianos and similarly useless items, often leaving them midway to their destination. I can understand food and tools but a piano???? People were obsesses with possessions....read a book about an African safari and the shite they would pack along.....it was crazy....

Why not travel in luxury?

Two hundred back then might be more like 20K to 200K now
Kinda pricy for those head west to get rich.

1. Oregon Trail
Pros: cheapest.
Cons: Six months or more. Injuns, disease, starvation.
Let's say you start from the Missouri River and it takes 6 month to get to San Francisco. What month are you starting out? Summers and winters can be brutal. Probably better to avoid the winter. Start in April and end up in San Francisco in September?

I am posting up in Colorado with a Bear burger shop

It was a conundrum. Start too early and you'd be held up by flooded rivers. Start too late and you'd arrive at the Sierras just in time for winter like the Donner party.

3. Schooner around Cape Horn.
Pros: Relatively luxurious
Cons: You probably can't afford it. You may be lost at sea.
Cape Horn is the most dangerous ocean passage in the world. I wouldn't even want to pass through it today, let alone on a wooden boat in 1850.

According to Grok:
For $200 in 1850:
Step 1: $200 × 35 (approximate inflation factor from 1850 to 2023) = $7,000 in 2023 dollars.
Step 2: Adjust for two years of inflation (2023 to 2025) at 2.5% annually: $7,000 × 1.025 × 1.025 ˜ $7,350.
Thus, $200 in 1850 would be equivalent to approximately $7,350 in 2025 dollars. This is an estimate, as exact inflation rates for 2024 and 2025 depend on future economic conditions, but it aligns with long-term trends.
Final Answer: Approximately $7,350.
