The underrated stooge, Shemp Howard

The least popular stooge had many phobias, ...cars dogs and water among them. But, his fear of flying was crippling. It was so bad that when the three stooges toured, they would have to travel across the country by train.

I never understood the Curly vs Shemp dilemma. Probably should take the time to read about it.

Shemp vs. Curly When Shemp had left the Stooges, Moe and Larry took kid brother Curly into the act as Shemp's replacement. Curly was the perfect fit. But by the mid-1940s, Curly's health was deteriorating, and Shemp was often called in as Curly's replacement when the Three Stooges had live performances. In 1946, Curly suffered a massive stroke, and Shemp agreed to come back permanently, replacing his kid brother as "The Third Stooge" again. (Initially, there was resistance from studio bosses, who thought Shemp "looked too much like Moe.") -

Did either of them chronically wet the bed?
Shemp did.
Shemp did.

Shemp was one ugly dude. He was funny as heck though. Love me some stooges.

The stooges are one of those weird deals where I loved them as a kid and mimicked them with my two cousins when we played (as in we have many home films of us doing skits), yet I have barely any memory of them as an adult.
I do remember we made our nerdiest cousin play Shemp and he hated it, so perhaps that is relevant to this thread.

A lot of people probably don't remember that Doaldsonville held a Shemp Festival in the 80's.

"From Kirk Landry: My name is Kirk P. Landry and I am currently the Fire Chief in a small town of about 8000 in Louisiana. Back in the late 80's I was the senior commiteeman and co-founder of the annual Shemp Festival. It all started one March afternoon when my friends and I realized it was Shemp's birthday. One of my friends lived next door to our local bakery and we went over to buy a couple of "pastrys" to celebrate the Howard way. It became an annual event and grew to global proportions. Articles were written about our Shemp Festival in newspapers across the nation including an article in Playboy. The festival consisted of a "Hoi Polloi" Ball, A parade through our city, Shemp look and sound alike contest, Crowning of a Pie Queen, and culminated with the "Moron's Pie Fight". A thousand pies were thrown each year. We no longer hold the festival but every year a few of us get together and drink a toast to honor our favorite stooge, Shemp. "

Did everybody just die of a heart attack at 60 back then?
60 isn't really old these days. It's not old old. It's kind of old. Not real old.

Agree. I'm a big fan of the 3 stooges, but shemp was horrible. When I record the series, I skip the shemp episodes.

Shemp had the best skits.
He carried Moe and Larry the entire time.
