Looks like a storm trooper. Hopefully they aim better than one.
They don't really have to, though. It's nuclear devices they're lobbing. It might be the perfect weapon system for a Stormtrooper.

The white piece is not part of the helmet. It is an accessory called the Lead Zirconate Titonate (PLZT) goggles that attach to the normal helmet. The PLZT goggles are able to detect a nuclear flash faster than the eye and shut down in time to block the blinding light of that nuclear flash, thus saving the eyesight of the pilots.
A new version, that will essentially be just a normal visor on the helmet instead of this Darth Vader looking contraption, is under development right now.

So, um, is that your B-52?

Don't know because I don't know the exact time/date that photo was taken. It was definitely a picture of one of the B-52s deployed to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar during the time period where I was the Deputy Operations Group Commander. I could have been on that jet, but I don't know. I chose that photo because it was available on a photosharing site this website recognizes and it was from the time period when I was last in an active flying role.

Aw hell yeah.
When those things fly halfway around the world to drop some attitude adjustment on someone's head, what kind of facilities does that big arse thing have for the crew? Is there a cot where you can sleep in shifts? Is there a toilet? Galley?
Or do you just pull on some Depends, down some No-Doz, and strap in for the duration?

It’s a lot smaller than it looks inside. We have a “bunk” to sleep in. Not very comfortable and if you are long duration you have added crew members which means added stuff.
We have a piss can if you will, and a “honey bucket” for anything else, though highly discouraged. If the flight is long enough we get “Go” pills.

Pretty much ADHD medicine that we get to help keep us focused for critical phases of flight.

Cool, thanks for doing all that you did for us.

David, what would you do if Reddit ever ceased to exist?
Cool thread though.

Just curious....You talking about the Iraq/'Stan time period or going back to Desert Storm?

We have the finest amenities the 1950s would have to offer. For a "galley" we have a very small convection oven that has temperature options of either off or surface of the sun. For #1 we have a "urinal" that you can piss into and drains down into a plastic reservoir that is dumped after flight. For #2, we have a "honey bucket" which is a metal box that can be lined with a trash bag. The box has a lid which has a toilet seat. You shite into the trash bag and then tie it up and stow it away until after you land.

Okay, now I understand why BeastMode said it's frowned up. You're literally shitting in a bucket right behind the rest of the crew.
Thanks, guys.

OR, they just agree to close their eyes for 5 seconds.

Bought one off Ebay to wear on the weekly trip to Wal Mart.

I know a baw who uses that to TIG and MIG weld. He's the best welder in all the south, just ask him.

I hope this is an attempt at humor

The pilots have thermal curtains to cover the windows and wear the PLZTs. The rest of the crew get eye patches.
