The guy that gave a nation a name for Alabama fans and residents has passed.

Winston Groom was a great writer and pretty good fellow. Forrest Gump was far from his best work.

I would hope so. Both of those books were terrible. Not sure how they made a decent movie out of them.

It worked because it was fun. It was not deep or depraved. It was a decent but slow guy bumping through humorous historical circumstances. His non-fiction was some good stuff as was his last book, El Paso.

It's been at least 20-25 years since I read them. I just remember getting to a part where he was playing chess in space with a chimp(it seems like the chimp could talk, but it's been awhile) and thinking that I was really glad that the movie diverted from the book as much as it did.

Forrest Gump grossed $600M+ and Groom saw none of that money, as the studio claimed it didn't make a profit.

When the studio tried to get the rights to make a Gump sequel, WG told them he would have to say no, since the first movie was so unprofitable and he didn't want them to lose any more money.

Hollywood accounting is a bitch. I think everyone with the circumstance to catch a contract nowadays knows to take points off the gross, not the profit.

He was also a professional wrestler for a bit. Yeah, the book was pretty bad, they did a great job adapting it into a semi-believable story.

I remember the sequel presenting a headline somewhere along the lines of, "Retard Covers Town in shite!" after Jr. had developed a way to run a town's electrical grid from pig shite and Forrest turned the valves the wrong way, resulting in too much pressure in the pipes.

I always liked Lewis Grizzard when it came to southern writers.

I eat at Sprayberry's when I can too.

Same here. I'd love to reread all of his books. He was a great storyteller.

Forrest Gump” was a goddam slice of perfection in our imperfect world.

Winston was a great guy. I knew him personally and he is proof that not all bama fans are ________. Forrest Gump was not his best work. He will be missed.
