The projects in N.O. all had cycles of violence. All were bad, but a young crop of unparented boys would come of age, and terrorize the place and each other. Once they got to the point of major killing episodes, the police would decend. Individuals in that generation either died off, were severely injured, or were in put in jail. A couple would become rap artists and a handful would possibly escape to a blue collar job.

The project a few blocks over would then take primacy as the toughest neighborhood in town, and become the battle ground for awhile.

Rinse. Repeat.

Sometimes the gangs would take names, sometimes they'd just be the project name, ie. "The Calliope Boyz", "The Melph Boyz" (Melpomine), etc.

Some projects got so damn bad and the kiling so widespread, that even the hardened poors tried to move out. The old Desire Project was about half abondoned before they tore it down. At one time, it was the worst hell hole in the entire western world.
