The amount of possible ways to arrange a deck of cards is 52!. That's 52*51*50*49...*1, which equals 8.0658e67 or 80658175170943878571660636856403766975289505440883277824000000000000.

To put the size of that number into context, let's discuss how long 52! seconds would last. Let's assume you start a timer counting down from 52! to 0

Start on the western coast of Central America walking along the equator of Earth. Take a step, wait one billion years, take a step, wait one billion years, and so on until you've returned to your starting spot.

Now reach into the Pacific Ocean and remove a drop (.05 ml) of water. Resume your one step per billion years around the equator, removing one drop from the Pacific Ocean every time you return to your starting spot, until the ocean is empty.

Once the ocean is empty, place a sheet of paper on the ground, fill the ocean back up, and start the process over again. On step every billion years, one drop of water removed every trip around the equator, one sheet of paper every time you completely empty the ocean, fill it back up and repeat.

If you did that until your stack of paper reached the sun, and you looked down at the timer you started, you'd still have 8.063e67 seconds left on your timer that started with 8.065e67 seconds. You'd have to take the stack down and start all over about 3000 more times before the timer got to zero.

The math

Did you know there are more possible unique games of chess than there are atoms in the observable universe?

As large as this number is, it's still just finite. And the size of the infinity of natural numbers isn't even the largest.

My mind is always blown when I think about how many real numbers there are between 0 and 1.

Vsauce's videos are great. I've spent a few hours every few months watching them. Started down the rabbit hole again tonight after that astrology thread linked one of the videos.

There an infinite number of "real" numbers between 0 and 1.
