Thought the sewer debt, etc. is Jeff Co. and not Bham City.
If anyone thinks Bham is in the same class as a Montgomery or Jackson or whatever, they haven't been there in the last couple years.
They're putting a Publix downtown and that says all you need to know about how that part of town is changing imo.

There isn't a worse drive than Lake Charles to Lafayette.
Straight, flat, nothing to look at, too much traffic, and horrible drivers.

theres more to a city than just downtown. do all the residents live downtown are all the schools downtown as well?
I know Bham is revitalizing the shite out of downtown but there is still more.

How many have military bases? I've been to the base in Albany ga twice and wanted to leave as soon as I got there.

Alabama has a good network of higher learning, but I am willing to bet that a low percentage actually choose to stay in the state. They are opting for more fun cities like Atlanta/Nashville/NOLA.
Each of those cities has a fun/safe inner city area that caters to recent graduates.
Bham is trying to create that to cater to young graduates and to recruit more employers.

Bham has come a long way. I last visited their downtown area about 2 years ago and it was really nice.

So what makes it unattractive to potential residents? Is there just not much growth going on? corruption? shitty schools? bad housing markets?

Like any city, it has good areas and bad areas. Crime is bad and poverty is pretty bad too. In the decent areas, it's great, but in the bad areas its really bad.

As far as potential residents go, there isn't shite to do there. Every time I go home I am glad I left because activities are limited and the only people I ever see at the bar is all my jackoff friends who never left the town and work in the oilfield now. It is home for me, but I don't plan on moving back.

That makes sense..and it has UAB right to anchor it but I think Bham is about 4 or 5 decades too late. Couldve easily have been what Atlanta is today.

It's tough to have fun in Shreveport. You have to really try hard. There's an old saying about Louisiana cities:
"If you're not having fun in Shreveport, you're not trying hard enough. If you're not having fun in Baton Rouge, you're not trying. If you're not having fun in New Orleans, you're dead."

most schools are bad, all the sports teams left, few good restaurants, the nice parks are filled with undesirables, not much to do outside of downtown for night life, boardwalk wasn't what it was hoped to be, filled with thugs now.
