I am a 60s kid, our neighborhood was basically Lord of the Flies
Posted on 7/14/21 at 12:40 pm to DemonKA3268
My sisters and I stayed home all summer by ourselves in the 80s when we were like 10, 8 and 6. People would call CPS about that today

Depended on the kid, too. Crybabies would go home. Peer pressure kept a lot of them from going home when maybe they should have.
That's true.
I remember trying to jump my bike on a rickity arse ramp only to have my back tire blow out right before I got to it and I slid past the ramp on my back. Didn't go in but damn that hurt.

We wanted to be outside. Being inside under parental supervision is what we called punished back in the day. Inside sucked balls. It’s something that happened to you when you were sick or punished.
Fact
And moms knew what was going on. When they were curious, they'd call someone else in the neighborhood. They networked.
Kids valued independence.

i was roaming the woods once and got stung by a stinging caterpillar. I found some wet concrete that someone dumped and made a patch to cover the sting. Fixed it like charm. Typical 80s stuff

Same here. From 8 on, I was at home alone.

When my brother and I were 13-14 we lived off base at barksdale… in the summer my dad would take us to the reservation ( raw land/lake past the nuclear weapon part) used as a land buffer and drop us off… he would ask when we wanted him to come pick us up… usually 3-4 days… we had matches..a can opener, sterno, sleeping bag , knifes , a plastic tarp , canned food, fishing poles …and a watch….
Life was good!!!!!
Only time I spent in my house was sleeping eating and night tv….

The family behind us was like that, but just 2 kids. Mom was a single mom that worked. As soon as she left for the day, we all showed up at their house to plan our day. Looking back, I now feel bad because we'd all eat all of their food in the summers, and I know she struggled to make ends meet. I remember one time she was dating some dude that gave her a box of chocolates, and we found it and ate every damn one of them.

What BS this is. I was a child of the 80s. My mom was a stay at home mother. Yes we played outside most of the day, but she made us come in for lunch and to cool us down. She feed almost the entire neighborhood.
She drove a huge station wagon and would load it up with the neighborhood kids- take us to the movies, take us to the pool.
I'm sorry her mother was a POS mom- but what she writes was not the norm.

I’m feel blessed to have been born in 1977. I got to be a kid in the 80’s and a teen in the 90’s. I had no idea back then how good we had it.

It was for me and all my friends.

Being 30 in the 90’s was a whole different deal than being 16.

We weren't poor but my parents were split up. My dad usually came home for lunch but we pretty much roamed free.
We knew just about everyone in the neighborhood and plenty of my friends moms were home all day. My grandparents lived a mile down the road too. We definitely had a lot more freedom than most kids do now.

Yeah, I think there is definitely some romanticism both in the OP and in this thread. 80's kids definitely had more freedoms than kids today have, but I honestly can't recall a single day growing up where I was gone in the morning and didn't come back home until dark. We'd pop in for lunch, something to drink, watch TV, play Atari/Nintendo, etc. Then there were days we went to the pool or to a movie or something, and there was a mom involved in those until we were teenagers and could just be dropped off. And I don't feel like I was ever really neglected.

You have a point… I felt comfortable in the 80’s. Not worrying about getting shot. Just felt free.

At night we would play spotlight chase in the neighborhood. Somebody's mom would fix Kool-aid and bring it out to us.
I have a distinct memory of the scents of Kool-aid and Off bug spray mingling together.

Neighborhoods had a lot more social stability then than they do now. The world has flipped, you really have no idea of who lives in your neighborhood today. There's so much turnover. The neighborhood we grew up in during the 70's had long term residents.
