Did the F-35 replace the F-22?
no. the f-22 is meant to do one thing. destroy the enemys air capabilities and just dominate the skies. its an air superiority fighter and it does that like no fighter ever has before. the f-35 is more of a strike air craft meant to attack ground targets. however, they have tried to tack on air superiority capabilities and thats where the controversy about the f-35 have come from because apparently, it just doesnt do that very well

I thought the theory was that air to air combat (dog fights) would be obsolete with the advent of these high performance fighters? Aren't the systems on these supposed to be so advanced that direct confrontations will be unnecessary?

this was our line of thinking in vietnam and it led to us losing our kill ratio of like 6 to 1 in korea to like 2 to 1 in nam. we learned that fighters will still need to be able to maneuver and engage other fighters in direct confrontations

Also, the Century series fighters just weren't designed for dogfighting. Intercepting and shooting down bombers, yes (F-102, F-106, F-4), low-level nuclear bombing (F-105), etc. Not an air superiority fighter in the bunch.

And I thought this thread was going to be about doing a negative G pushover with inverted tanks.
