We decided to try capturing the Tesla Roadster with the 16?-f/3.75 Tenagra III (“Pearl”) robotic unit in Arizona, available as part of the partnership between the Virtual Telescope Project (Italy) and Tenagra Observatories (Arizona, USA).
We slewed the scope where the JPL ephemerides placed the object and we found it there. So, we started capturing a few sequences of images.
We immediately spotted the Tesla Roadster, quite bright, around mag. 15.5 and moving image after image across the stars. At the time of our observations, the car was at about 470.000 km from us.
We managed to take dozen of images, and we used a group of them to show the trail of the object across the stars.

What a pointless waste of money. Maybe he should invest in making his company profitable without taxpayers

It was a test launch of a rocket which turned out successful, how is that pointless?

What the frick are you talking about? First of all, this launch speaks to the profitability of SpaceX. Secondly, SpaceX is private, so what does this have to do with taxpayers? Thirdly, sending the Tesla Roadster was to demonstrate some sort of load capacity of the rocket launched and to further advertise the brand.

He launched a car into space costing God knows what to take pictures of shite that we already have pictures of. Meanwhile his company loses a billion dollars a quarter... or like $675 million this quarter. I'm a fan of getting rid of all corporate welfare.

The car was simply ballast, they were going to test the heavy booster regardless so why use concrete for ballast when you can do something more interesting. When your companies business is sending stuff to space, your biggest customer is gong to be the federal government/taxpayers, just like Lockheed, Boeing, Grumman, and every other aerospace company that came before SpaceX.

I heard a certain David Bowie tune in the distance while outside last night

You spout off the same crap anytime Tesla, SpaceX or Musk is mentioned. It's pathetic at this point.

Probably because it caught fire and is easier to see.

This has got to be an act.

You might have me confused with someone else. I rarely if ever have commented on a Tesla/Musk thread. Maybe I have once but I don't even remember that.

Are you under the impression that the purpose of the launch was the send the car in to space?

Ok now you're just lying. I've seen you post in every Tesla thread I read
