My mom's dad (my paw-paw) served in the Army Air Corps and trained as an airplane mechanic- a job he held (with civil service) till the day he retired.
During the 1930s he was an airplane mechanic in Hawaii. He worked on Amelia Earhart's plane in 1935 before she became the first person to fly solo between Hawaii and California (sorry for the poor scan quality). That's him on the far right with his hand on the propeller:
Things were sleepy in his hometown of Princeton, IN-- the local paper did an article on his meeting and interaction with Earhart. My mom has the clipping somewhere...
