Negative. Cordova sucks. City schools, horrendous traffic. Hard pass.

This 100%

I would also not do Collierville based on your current situation. The suburbs are safe but there just isn’t much to do in them.

If you and your wife like to get out and drink and eat and be social then I would recommend east memphis. Maybe start looking from High Point to the edge of Germantown and stay north of popular.

Midtown is cool but you need to be much more selective where you live in those neighborhoods.

Memphis is not a walkable city so plan on driving everywhere

Memphis is weird and isnt for everybody. I've lived here for 37 years, both in the city its self and the suburbs and it is what it is. I can offer you some advice though if you make the move:

1) I think living areas have already been pretty well laid out. East Memphis, Mud Island if in the city or Collierville or Germantown if suburbs. I live in the East Memphis/Colonial Acres area and its ok. Pretty safe, affordable and good proximity to stores/eateries etc and not terribly far from Midtown and Downtown if you want to do nightlife stuff.

2) the most important piece of information i can give to anybody moving or visiting; you know where you are supposed to be and not supposed to be. It is pretty obvious. Stay where you are supposed to be. If you find yourself in an area where you are not supposed to be; conduct your business, dont act like an arse and gtfo. Follow those simple rules and youll be fine.

3) pack heat and dont be afraid to brandish that thang if needed.

All of that is pretty spot on. I've lived here for 18 years now - since I started grad school back in 2004. Lived on Mud Island for two years, Arlington for 6 and Germantown for the last 10.

East Memphis, Arlington, Lakeland, Germantown and Collierville are just fine. Germantown has very little crime at all (and it's all around the southwest area that borders Memphis) and the school system is fantastic. But if you are a young professional that doesn't want to drive a long way for work, living on Mud Island will be fine for you. Methodist University, Regional One (The Med), St. Jude's and LeBonheur (children's hospital) are all downtown so Mud Island is really close. You can always look at Lakeland and Arlington (at least a 30 min drive to downtown) in the NE part of the county - those are nice areas as well. Midtown is the artsy area of the city and the situation on safety varies between streets honestly. There are some cool spots - someone mentioned High Point Terrace - that's a good neighborhood that's relatively safe.

If you love heavy traffic - look at Southaven. If you want to live in MS, then you will need to get south to Hernando or Lewisburg. But traffic will leave you with a decent sized commute every day.

Memphis is great. Don't listen to anyone comparing it to Jackson Montgomery or Baton Rouge.

What do you need to know?
Gus's has the best fried chicken in the world.

East Memphis and midtown are good/decent places to live within city limits.

Bartlett, and Southaven are probably best burbs to commute to downtown

If you are working at AutoZone they do a hoorah meeting and have to say their motto every single morning.

First Horizon just got bought by TD Bank (Canada not tiger droppings)

Go see the band Grape when you get the chance.

The breweries are all pretty cool.
Shelby farms is huge outdoor park. The zoo is pretty awesome.

There's a lot of softies on the OT who are afraid of their own shadow. Memphis is cool. I'd live in the midtown area. Not too far from work and has very nice neighborhoods. Lots of great bbq. Be sure to check out Central, the Commissary, the BBQ Shop, Leonard's.

Edit: East Memphis is even nicer, but further from downtown if you have to drive in every day.

I live in Collierville and commute to near the airport every day. It's really not a bad commute, about 25-30 minutes, it would be probably another 15 minutes to downtown offices. My wife used to work downtown at the Orpheum and commute from Collierville every day, it was doable but wouldn't work now that we have kids. You probably need to look in Midtown or East Memphis for a house with a yard. I wouldn't do Southaven just because of the traffic; I don't know what the traffic from Bartlett to downtown is like, but I would prefer Germantown or Collierville over Bartlett if you want the Burbs

Made it back to our campground after a day in Memphis. Hit up Paynes BBQ and enjoyed it for sure. The wife wanted to go the outlet mall in Southaven and also took the kids to the bass pro pyramid. Overall it was a good day.

We have loved the Germantown area. Lived here the past 7 years. Great schools, churches, close to things to do in Memphis,
