Houma has a population of just under 34000. I’m not sure if that even qualifies as a city, so yes, it in fact is small.
Even if you include he entire Terrebonne Parish/ Houma-Thibodeaux Area, still barely 200k.
Houma is a small to medium sized town with very little going for it.

I don't think anyone's ever described Houma as "on the rise"

have you ever actually been there?

You can also move to Bayou Blue if you don't want to live in a city.
You could move to downtown Houma and not live in a “city”. The notion of what a real city is to small town Louisiana folks is always funny.

Yes. I grew up there. Went to elementary school and high school there. I’m the only one in my immediate family and one of the few in my extended family to leave.
Still visit every couple months. It looks worse and worse every time I visit.

won't argue that with you. But your perspective is distorted because you no longer live here. Houma is pretty decent for Louisiana. OP is in Alec. Houma will be a vast improvement. With small kids and raising a family, I'd say its a great location.
Long as his kids know they need to leave and go live somewhere out of state when they turn 18+, he should be fine.

Well OP if you're going to move to Houma let me give you a few tips so you can fit in
1. Start smoking cigarettes
2. Put on about 20 to 50 lbs
3. Make friends with a shrimper
4. Be prepared to overpay for a house
5. Get used to gossip
6. Embrace littering

I grew up in Houma. Its a good place to rise a family. Though I don't ever see myself going back there.
Definitely send your kid to private school. Catholic Schools are cheap.
Live in Sugarmill or Ellendale.

Ask jmarto about the move- He is a Houma transplant and hopefully is still enjoying his time here. It also doesn't hurt that he manages Hooter's, and gives discounts to those on TD-
jk
But maybe he can help you with new chains coming to help entice you to take the job. He is usually in the loop.

Nope. St Bernadette and Vandy. Did live in Broadmoor for several years and have friends from Evergreen and HL.

I love Houma. Lived there from birth to 2nd grade. Then moved to San Francisco, then back to Houma in 7th or 8th grade.
Live in BR now, but would move to Houma in a second. My parents and large extended family are still there.
It is worlds better than Alec. Women are very friendly. Walton and Johnson refer to Houma as the land of the big titty women. Lots of good seafood, lots of good fishing, and good places to hunt too. Your kids can walk from your house to their favorite rabbit hunting spot with shotguns, and neighbors won't freak out. Very little crime. My parents never lock their door, even while on vacation.
There is a hint of night life, and a decent family style mardi gras season. When I am home for a few nights I always hit the bars with my cousins or brothers, and we always have fun.
Schools are not as bad as stated in this thread. Vandebilt is damned fine school that produces national merit students regularly. Hl Bourgeois and Terrebonne are not bad either.
This board has a lot of people from Thibodaux, and Thibodaux tends to look down at Houma for some reason even though it is much crappier.
ETA everything I said applies to life on the westside of the intracoastal only. All the negative stuff in this thread applies to the Eastside completely.

maybe. maybe not.
But I figured I could get a rise out of someone so I said it.

VCHS was good when I was there. Things can change tho.

Yeah when I was there in the early 90s it was hands down the best school in the region.
Have nieces and nephews there now as well as kids of friends and cousins. Sounds like it is still better than public schools but not so much so that it justifies the cost. It’s almost more of a status thing than an actual educational benefit now it seems
