I grew up poor
We were country folk though that area is no longer country
Only after hurricanes
Occasionally, we didn't have central air/heat. We had gas space heaters. and one window unit AC.
Of course I'm in my 50s so that was long ago. We also shared our 2 bedroom 1 bath home with other family members at times, had as many as 9 living there at one time or another.
