My wife is a teacher (formerly of a great school in ascension parish)

She told me a year ago (maybe 2 now) that cursive writing is not in the curriculum anymore. The kids only have to learn to sign their name and that's it. There are no lessons teaching this anymore. The reasoning was it's not needed in today's culture and is literally a waste of time. It's a leftover relic from centuries ago.

he teacher asked her to stop because she never learned to read cursive and did not know who to return the paper to. Where did it say that?

I made it up.

Writing in cursive is a skill that wasn't needed in the world 50 years ago, 20 years ago, and surprise, not even today.

If this angers you, it's called faux outrage.

What's the big deal against cursive? How can you have a signature if you can't write in cursive? Seems without it, it would be quite simple for someone to forge things in your name.

she wasn't signing a fricking check, she was writing her name so the teacher could identify whose paper this was.

But this is the age she should learn cursive. If you wait until the girl is old enough to start writing her own checks, it's a bit late at that point to try and teach her how to write cursive.

I saw this on Yahoo yesterday and can't understand why it's becoming a "thing."

Teacher asked student to stop writing in cursive. Student continues to write in cursive. Teacher asks student to stop again. Am I missing something?

Cursive is a huge deal to some people. Mainly people over 45 IME. I think it's a waste of time to teach it to kids who will barely have to use handwriting at all. Teach them to use a spreadsheet instead.

Forging signatures is easy, plus nobody ever checks anyway. I sometimes draw things when I'm asked to sign.

You must have low standards when considering "skills."

Do you also consider using an apostrophe or abbreviation a skill?

sorry baw, having the ability to write is absolutely a skill.

its no different than being able to speak multiple languages.

Then why make it even easier by not being able to sign your own name in cursive?

According to my wife they teach how to sign your name in cursive and that's the extent of it now. No more handwriting in cursive classes.
