You are 100% correct however those subsidies were not granted to facilitate teleworking they were granted to facilitate better communication which in turn facilitated teleworking...those subsidies were granted whether telecommuting was ever going to be a thing or not. The same is true for the subsidies for power production and distribution, they were done for many reasons none of which was teleworking. When you consider the energy wasted in commuting, providing power for conditioned air in 2 or more spaces because the occupant is away at work but their AC/furnace/water heater etc is still running I bet the money saved would surpass that which is supposed to be saved by EVs and Hybrids.

Fair points. I would say to consider that EV subsidization, like the ones you mentioned, also has additional benefits.

It would be really difficult to quantify.

That model is being discontinued because nobody wants to buy it. Americans like big cars.

But yeah….most EV’s are larger and cost more. The closest is probably the Chevy Bolt, but even that is more like a Corolla or Jetta sized hatchback - the next size up from that Mitsubishii. You can get the Bolt for about $23,000 after the tax credit. But it has only a 230 mile range. That works for commuters but not for everyone.

The $22,000 Corolla hybrid is a very compelling choice for a commuter vehicle. That’s an incredible deal for an extremely fuel efficient, reliable car. It should be more popular than it actually is right now.

I'm not sure its being discontinued but I know they have no resell value LOL...thats how we bought one with under 7000 miles for less than $14k. Can buy one 6 years old with 100K on it in our area for $5k. I wanted a hybrid commuter. After doing the research and the cost analysis an ICE commuter (corolla, Versa, Accent etc) was far more cost effective than any hybrid BUT they are outlandishly over priced new or used. The Mitsubish was not as bad. It doesnt have a lot of bells and whistles but I spend an hour a day in it in the morning and another hour in the evening...it has a radio.

There will undoubtedly be benefits from the subsidization of EVs. The benefits that are not even identified yet will, if history of similar subsidies hold true, will far surpass the revenue and savings from just EVS themselves.

The space program is a fine example. The collective spending of the space program made the computer age possible. EVs will benefit mankind in SO many ways that are inconceivable right now that any logical person is OK with that subsidy. The problem is they never sell this stuff as a R&D project. People are not stupid...they know whats up. If you tell them its a renewable energy they are going to rightfully have questions. If you tell them it is a R&D project and why it is important they will get on board.

So how long does it take to charge one? What is the cost for a home charging installation? What is the cost per year for the extra electricity you'd be using?

These are all questions people want HONEST answers to.

There have recently been videos going around from the Houston area showing EVs with low batteries lining up a city block waiting for an open charge bay to become available. What's the story behind that?

That’s a stupid analysis and very misleading. They added the cost of the subsidies to build the car to the cost of fueling the car. That’s two different things. The subsidies should be added to the cost of the car, not to the cost of fueling the car.

At home, overnight. At a supercharger, it depends on how much juice you need.

Cost me $800 for the Tesla charger and installation.

For my wife its about $350 a year.

Most of those i've seen end up being rental companies hitting superchargers for returned vehicles.

IDK man, i spend a lot of time on here trying to talk to people how this is driving improvement in storage tech, how shite tons of interconnected storage is a benefit for society, how their car could be enrolled in a VPP program. A lot of people don't want to hear it.

Those are all the homeless EV owners in Houston who can’t charge their cars at night. You should support those people who are at every red light in town begging for your change.
