I call HOA security. If they can dispatch, I wait in my room, armed. HOA security shack is 20 seconds by car from my house.
If they are not available, I tell them to call highway patrol.

Kids are upstairs, parents are downstairs. That's why I'm so conflicted. If we were all close together i would wait for the criminal to come find us and then vaporize him/them. But with the kids being upstairs, the staircase being a good 30 feet from my bedroom, do I just post up at my doorway and hope I can pick him off if he heads up the stairs?

Grab gun, go help dogs deal with the issue - which would likely have been taken care of by the time I got there. No one is getting upstairs without several 4 legged creatures inflicting serious harm.

Well hopefully the alarm is screaming like a mofo the second they entered and they decide to leave.
If not, I'm going to the baby's room to get her. If someone is between she and I, it's on.

All depends on the layout of the house. We used to sleep upstairs. I had a one-way deadbolt lock on the door at the top of the stairs. I locked it every night. Alarm would alert us to anyone entering. Simply post up in the doorway of the room across from that door and if anything tries to bust through it there are several rounds of 00 Buckshot to deal with first. After that it would be back up gun. Wife would be in the bedroom with my kid with the other shotgun.
But now we sleep downstairs, kids up. There are at least two guns in my bedroom so I'd have one as well as my wife. She would stay put and I would go out and upstairs if necessary.
