Golf is dying because you can't text and swing
A lot of truth in that. Regular golf is shrinking but alternatives like Top Golf are blowing up. My top golf is busy all the time because you can drink, eat, and take your girl while still competing with your boys.
And you can instagram about it while your doing it.

And real golfers now rejoice. They no longer have to play 6 hour rounds of golf because some arse clowns think they can pick up a set of clubs at the local walmart, go to the local course and play like Tiger.

I didn't start playing golf until my mid-40's and - due to how terrible I was at it - would not have continued were it not for some friends who played scramble all the time, which allowed me to gradually improve without having to keep my own score. I've now been playing over 10 years and still am not any good. But, I love the game and will continue to play it. I think a lot more people would get an addiction to golf were they ever to start to play.
Having said the above, I can imagine how expensive it must be to maintain a golf course. Courses are closing all of the time because they cannot bring in enough income to pay the bills.
As more and more courses dry up, the green fees/ membership fees, etc. for those that stay open will likely become cost prohibitive for folks like me. Or, the still affordable courses will be so busy that it will be difficult to get a tee time.
I hope things turn around, but it does not look promising to me.
