Spinoff: How many OTers see a therapist?

The thought has been crossing my mind esp after reading the burnt out 30 something thread. Basically in a similiar boat. Mid 30s, single, no kids, great income, etc but just burnt out on life. Have a ton of hobbies but they are just not doing much anymore. Tried dating more, but as the old saying goes "bitches be crazy"....esp the older they get.
Who sees a regular therapist and what have your experiences been like?

I'm a big fan of Howard Stern and he's constantly talking about how he sees a therapist and how it has changed his life for the better. I also have a buddy who sees one and he says it helps him sort out his bullshite.

Save your money and tell us on the OT all of your troubles. We're here to help.

My mom tried to make me go to one after my father died. I went to one session with my sister because we were having some trouble. It helped her, but I didn't have the same issues as she was having.
I'd rather talk to a close friend about issues than someone who is a professional. I don't feel like I need advise but sometimes just talking is enough for me.

Not near what I was about a year ago

I'm a big believer in therapy, especially with the right Dr. That's probably the most difficult part--finding someone that is 1-good, and 2-you feel comfortable with. I think therapists sometimes get a bad reputation and society views therapy only for crazies.

Get married and pop out a few heathens or just knock some crazy bitch up and buy her a house if you don't feel like dealing with the divorce process. I promise you won't be bored any longer but you'll probably need blood pressure meds and need to start researching the local Alcoholics Anonymous meeting groups.

More than likely my primary care is about to send me to one soon. Im dreading it.

Are you talking psychologist (cognitive) or psychiatrist? Just talking out problems or mental illness suspicion?

Well, psychiatrists do both, usually with drug intervention as well. To make it sound really nuts, I've been under psychiatric care for over fifteen years, but it saved my life.

I saw a therapist for 5 years. I took advantage of my EAP at work. Got 8 free sessions a year for 5 years using it. The sessions I did pay for were no more than paying a copay for a doctor's visit.
Check and see if your employer has an EAP(employee assistance program).
I only stopped seeing her because she retired. I saw her like every 6 weeks though. Long after the initial reasons I went to see her were resolved I realized how much I liked going. She was a Christian therapist(which was important to me) and I just liked having a non biased person listen to me. I could vent to her about things in my life and I wasn't judged for it. She didn't force her opinion on me of what I should do.
You have to be the type of person willing to open up. They can't help you if you are the type of person that barely says two words in a session. It can be very helpful for someone...if they are willing.

Whining is for weak women and babies.

It's pretty self-explanatory. What is a blue sky?
