Most lawyers juggle double digit cases- at least the ones who keep the lights on.

Overworked PDs juggle triple digit cases with diminished staff and no money to hire experts or otherwise investigate the case.

every PD I went to school with is juggling several hundred cases. They wish their cases were only in the double digits.

In the criminal courts ive been in, they usually ask who your lawyer is. The ones without one seem to be assigned someone there.

Lets say you just want to plea guilty to a misdemeanor and dont want the lawyer fees, do they still make you have a lawyer? Seems ridiculous some dude thats going to just take a weed charge needs to pony up another 1500-3000 for a lawyer.

Remember, you get what you pay for.

This is mostly true but not always. I have witnessed several very talented, aggressive and intelligent attorneys from the federal defender's office work over the AUSAs prosecuting my cases. Underestimate them at your peril.

Of course, this is on the federal side. I'm sure underfunded small towns have their struggles in getting strong public defender representation.

If you can't pay he'll sentence you to be the public defender's butler.
