Must be a juvenile with that reddish-brown color, right?
Great photos.

That reminds me I hit a white heron with my truck yesterday. Dang thing was flying low and perpendicular to the highway. Came out of nowhere. Feathers were flying.

the moulting kind of made me feel sorry for the grackles, but it also gives them a little more character
I don’t normally pay much attention to them, even though I’ve probably seen a million of them, but the detailed molting in your pics caused me to focus on them a little more than I ever have.
My first thought, “Why are you posting pictures of some of the ugliest grackles I have ever seen”, but I soon realized the molting was the reason.

yes...sometimes, i like when i'm able to take a picture of a "flawed" bird/bug/animal because it can create a little more visual interest...like this dragonfly with very ragged wings...it's imperfect, but still beautiful...

there...feel free to add bird, bug and other critter photos in this thread...
Okay, you twisted my arm....
The first adult Wheel Bug I have seen in a few years. It is the largest assasin bug we have in North America:
Rusty Spider Wasp with a big Wolf Spider:
Sleepy Orange:
Sleepy Orange again:
Tiger Swallowtail:
Cloudless Sulphur that was a lot more greenish than yellow:
Spicebush Swallowtail
Long-spurred Meadow Katydid (a new Katydid for me):
Prince Baskettail:
A moth for you baws who are scared of paper wasps. It is a Sooty-winged Chalcoela Moth. Its larvae parasitises paper wasp larvae in their nests:
All around the house over the past few weeks.

It amazes me how much damage a butterfly/moth/dragonfly/whatever can take and still fly pretty normal.
The one on the left was getting around just as well as the one on the right. Later last Summer when the Aster was blooming I saw a bunch of tattered butterflies.

Keep driving down the coast past Rutherford and Holly beach until you get to Peveto Woods. During the spring and fall you would pick up a lot of migrants, shore birds too along there.

Nice shots! You seem to get a great variety of butterflies...it's been a bit hit or miss here this summer, although this guy followed me around yesterday...it kept landing on my hands, then it just sat on my head for a long time

Same here...I notice it very frequently in dragonflies...this one had a withered wing, but was getting around just fine

Nice!! I'm very envious of your kite photos in particular, since I haven't gotten any decent ones in several years...

Finally got a shot of Green Heron myself over the weekend (Beckley Creek Park)

Oh, and is a moorhen the same as a common gallinule? I'm not familiar with that term...

This Hackberry Emperor did that the other day. They like the porch and fluttering around it.
