re: So what was it that caused the mass overreaction to COVID-19?

It is tragic for those who have lost loved ones and I'm sure I would not see this quite the same had I experienced that, but for me trying to look at it objectively, ruining the businesses and livelihood of so many for something that kills less than half of one percent of those who contract can be labeled an overreaction both in presentation and practice and I have zero issue with label.
To be fair, the "idiots" who masked up for preventative purposes: If they didn't, and didn't socially distance themselves, they could have been both asymptomatic and symptomatic carriers and have had a bigger spread/caused more chaos. I think it's pretty ridiculous to state that prior to vaccines, masking up and distancing didn't play a role in that 99% mortality rate/lowering the chances of people catching it. I'd say it probably would have still been in the high 80s, low 90s but masking up/distancing definitely had an effect on keeping the severity of mass infection low.

The Health Department in my city hired a PR director - that's how ridiculous this has all become. She's trying her best to scare people under 30 into getting vaccines - with zero empirical evidence to support it. Her rationale was mutated strains "might" be more dangerous - when everything I've read to date says the exact opposite. How can we believe anything these people tell us?

I would say to your statement, we can debate on the degree to which masking influenced infection rate, but mortality rate is what it is.

That's fair.
