Me! I went to McKinley Middle, then BRHS. I liked both of them because there was a lot of art/music/dance type classes and a diverse student population. Then, I transferred to a public school in MS and got quite the culture shock. I hated it. Was finally allowed to transfer to a private school my senior year. It wasn't the cultural learning experience I was getting at the magnet schools but at least I wasn't in danger of stepping into the middle of a gang fight.

I never understand the hate directed toward BRMHS. It is clearly one of the best high schools in the state, regardless of measure. I have had three daughters at BRMHS (one still attending...a junior) and would encourage any parent, regardless of income level, to consider sending their kids there. One of the attributes I appreciate most is the racial diversity and, in spite of what seems to be sour grapes by some posters, kids of all races succeed at a very high level.

I don't think Jackson has any magnet school but if I found one, I would much rather send my future kid there than to one of the private schools. I have yet to meet a private school kid from around here that isn't a raging or a closet racist.

BRMHS is the most racially proportionally diverse school in the state.

I went to private first half of early education then finished with one yr magnet middle followed by "1of the best" public high schools at that time.
Hands down better education from private. We were "taught" things in honors English IV that I learned in second grade at private school.
My children go to private school.

My mom taught public high school so I could go to private school.

Worth every penny and I was light years ahead of my freshmen classmates in college.

My kids are in private school - it is an investment living in this state because most of the public schools are lacking, at best.

Anyway, just move to Central or Zachary and call it a day. Unless 20k is like 5% of your income or less, you're getting ripped off IMO. Investment nothing. The 80k you pay on your kid's private high school will never earn the kid more in his/her working life than actually investing that money and letting it grow for your kid's working life. My parents wasted so much money on private schools. I wish they put the money in a fund to give me as an adult.

Maybe they get to meet other smart and rich kids with whom they can network and keep it going?

I could actually network with a few of my public school friends, if I were in jail.

Isn't Dunham like $15,000?

I know exactly what you mean. I spent four years at BRHS but my 8th grade year was at Prescott Middle, which was pretty much gangland central.

It's sad how they are running things in the EBR system these days. I went through public schools growing up and I feel forced to go private. It's infuriating.

I seems that they did waste their money since you obviously are not making it yourself.

I did the same, but loved it.

Guess those are good schools by La standards. But outside of the cesspool, they are shitty. But it's their money, I suppose.

CHS is only one of around twenty schools in the country to be awarded a blue ribbon school of excellence four times. Plus, the average ACT is routinely 5-6 points above the national average.

SJA, EHS, and BRHS, while not as accomplished, have similar stat lines.

I'm a St.Thomas Aquinas (Hammond) graduate, it's a descent school that does really really well in all sports in 2A. My brother goes there now and every student gets an iPad when they enroll. Personally I'm glad as hell they didn't get those until the year after I graduated. Private schools> public

Are they on par with some New England boarding schools for the uber rich? No. Are they above the national average? I'd say they are safely above the national average.
