re: So if I wanted to start my own protestant church... I'd need, what, a building?

Is Scripture preached?
Are Sacraments administered regularly?
Are historic creeds and catechisms used?
Is there a liturgy that includes all of the above.
Those are the minimum qualifications for me if you were to drop me in any given city.
There’s a chance that none of that is really present in most non denominational churches, and that’s why I don’t call them Protestant. They’re not. They wouldn’t even know what they are supposedly protesting.

This is one that's starting to be implemented by some reformed baptist churches (which I do not consider to be reformed. They pay lip service to a few Calvinist teachings, but then continue affirming 17th century and later baptist distinctives) in my area. The problem is that you can see them twisting the words of the people who created the historic creeds to make those words apply to them today. Phrases such as "one holy catholic and apostolic" and "one baptism for the forgiveness of sins" do not mean to a baptist today what they meant to the people who wrote and defended them in those councils.
I'm glad the SBC voted against adopting the Nicene Creed. It would have been a blasphemy.

If you go the prosperity gospel route you won't even need Bibles.

In general, I find Reformed Baptists to be about the most unlikable folks in Christendom.
That’s not nice, but neither are they. Far from it in my experience.
I’d rather go to a big non denom church.

One of those churches used to be a Snake Farm.
They should name it St. Patrick.

They're an extremely close 2nd after Fundamentalist Baptists for me. The KJVO dispensationalist type.
