Mississippi just update the law to eliminate the need for a pilots licence. Thinking of getting one myself for personal and work.

We use them to inspect gas lines and mining sites.

You do have to get license but it's not same as a pilot license.

For commercial operations, you need a license - in addition to registering the drone. LINK

You need a license, even if you use it in your own business...

If you mean getting a Part 107 Remote Pilots Certificate instead of the Section 333 Exemption (which required the operator of the drone to have a traditional pilots license), then you are correct. But it's not just Mississippi - it's the entire country. It's a federal regulation.

Question for OT plant baws
Could I use a drone to check a gauge at the top of a 50 ft vessel?

You must have a Federal Part 107 sUAS license to fly commercially.

The test is not easy, but if you study its not too bad.

Anyone utilize them for work other than military?

Professional photographers and videographers have seen huge levels of growth from drone footage.

I'm seeing more real estate agents using them for online listings

The FAA says that if you use a drone for the "furtherance" of your business, you must have a license. Real estate agents or construction companies who buy their own drone and use it for their own purposes are required to have a license.

They pretty much have all the bases covered. Another example they use is a drone operator who doesn't charge for flying the drone and capturing footage but does charge for the editing of the footage. Again, license required per the FAA.

You can do just about anything with them these days. Just about everyone has one.
