The big three have all moved to this model. They discount your plan if you pay for the phone monthly, so it works out to be the same amount roughly. I can trade my iPhone in every year to get the new model at no additional cost. Better then being locked into a phone for two years.

What they are trying to ultimately do is remove you from the grandfathered unlimited plan. We had this same dilemma where I was the only one with unlimited on the plan and if we switched to mobile share, I would lose it. Thankfully they rolled out the deal with all unlimited for all lines if you have directv and at&t. Now our bill is slightly cheaper albeit the whole family has unlimited. The only caveat is we have to buy the phone outright/next but I don't see the issue as we don't upgrade every single time there's a new iteration of a phone and also our bill is lower.

Yes, you're better off going to the Apple store and buying a brand new one and bringing it in to AT&T. I get mine off of CL and eBay for $3-400 in great shape.
Due to the iMessage debacle tethering to your number and not your device (meaning if you switch to androids, you wont receive text messages from imessage users for up to 45 days and possibly never), Android is the way to go. Cheaper phones and better/more innovative technology. Will probably have to change my number in order to go that route though.

Well that's just not true. I pay exactly the same now per month as I did prior to next. The "Discount" they give you only applied to Next customers. If I'd have chosen the $199 upgrade, they would have increased my bill by $25/line. So as long as I'm paying Next installments, my bill is $25 more than it would be if not.
So if my bill is $100/month, then $25 for the phone installments, then they give me a $25 discount, my bill is $100.00. And if I'd of subsidized, my bill would've been $125/month plus out of pocket $199 for the phone. Once I pay off the phone, the bill would drop to $75 because the discount still applies.
Which to me means AT&T is getting their money from me either way.
