6 weeks ago, MIL was not acting right. Just not herself. She is 80, but not your normal 80. Doesn't even look it nor had acted like it. Hell, would out run a 60 year old person. She has been in the hospital the last 4+ weeks and has went down to the point of no speech nor walk.

So, a shite load of test has been done and we got a answer. It came back saying that she is ANA and Sjogren's syndrome. Doctors are saying that this is very uncommon rare case. Very gray area for them. They saying it is autoimmune encephalomyopath/encephalitis. Prognosis is very poor.

Bad thing, they were told at the beginning to check for this. One of my SIL's ( wife's sister has this).

So, what does the OT doctors have to say about this prognosis? Should my wife have a test done ASAP?

Is there a cure? If there is no cure and nothing that can be done, I don't think I'd want to find out about it.

Does it usually not onset until 80? If so I wouldn’t worry

SIL came down with this at 55. She has been doing good with some treatments, but for how long is the question.

Fish, my wife was diagnosed with this last year, no cure, you may want to get her checked out. A lot of aches and pains can be because of this, good luck man ....

Pepe, what I read up on that, MIL has been treated for dry eyes about 2 years now. That has been good.

Fish, my wife has been on prescription eye drops, still she’s barely able to open her lids some mornings. Just one of many symptoms.

So she had a positive ANA test which is just a generalized marker for autoimmunity disease. As an aside, Sjogren’s actually has more specific tests. As far as whether your wife should be worried, people who have a family history of autoimmune disorders do tend to get them more (type 1 diabetes for example) but there’s no tests your wife can get right now and there’s no indication to test until your wife develops symptoms.

We have medical people in the family and had asked this 4 weeks ago. Problem there, it took 4 weeks to get a answer back from all the test. They just didn't know. Wife called and told me they pumping in something now for the autoimmune.

Oh, they were treating her for mini strokes. At lease 20 a day. Come to find out that they are thinking that those were NOT strokes, but that her brain was trying to reconnect .

If she went down fast mentally, there was probably an underlying medical cause that is treatable and would reverse the cognitive decline. It’s usually a UTI or dehydration.

If she truly had an autoimmune disorder affecting her brain, the treatment would be to pull down her immune system via steroids. The only way that would be a no go would be if she had an identified infection or vague high WBC count.

Thanks for that heads up. So, no DNA test could confirm if that is past to her?

That was checked and all clear week one. Like I said, this woman was walking a good 3-4 miles every morning till shite hit the fan. They were thinking a skeeter bite did it. Nope.

That was the first thing they treated her for when we took her to a ER.
