There will always be a group of the population that trusts the government and another that scrutinizes the government. For this reason the United States are able to function.

Exactly, eventually if a politician is good enough to advance to higher levels they will do so at the cost of morals and ethics.
I mean a bill just passed that said meat companies didn't have to tell us where the meat is from.
Another bill was passed that took those private military companies were off the hook if their guys ran around raping people over seas including American women.
85% of this country wanted back ground checks to buy guns and they shot that shite cold.
Is this a group that gives a frick about its citizens?

I'm guessing you're asking about the fed govt since you stated "Americans".
I look at it like this... By the time a politician has made it to the federal level they likely have played the game a while and already are in debt with favors up to their ears. They have learned how to get ahead and move up so they will sell out their morals and beliefs to further their career, ego and bank account.
I don't trust the politicians.
I also don't trust the government to be honest about anything. They all think they know what's best for the "commoners ". They think they know what's best and will spoon feed the masses to keep them dancing like puppets.
