re: Should the obese be a protected class in the workplace?

At the building I work there is a huge set of stairs we have to take to get to the lobby. As a person that struggles with obesity it's been pretty dehumanizing to have to stop fairly regularly and catch my breath halfway up the stairs. It's particularly annoying because my department ironically works on the basement level. A decent number of my coworkers are also overweight and we are thinking about trying to escalate this issue.

That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Obesity in the workforce is now treated like a disability. Accessible parking, desk and chairs.

Special considerations for what? Eating too many bags of 4.29 Doritos from Dollar General?

I think they should be forced into camps or regular fitness classes in order to be covered by their company insurance.

Serious question, Lou.
Would you say your or your coworkers obesity comes from a medical issue? That’s entirely possible and I think it’s fine to have ADA accommodations for that. Or is it due to poor diet and lack of activity?

I have a whale that works for me. Good employee. Only drawback is in the 6 years she has been here she has worn out about 8-9 plastic floor mats (over thin carpet) and broke a castor on her chair.
She was embarrassed but she does good work and is dependable.

I work with someone that's probably 300#.
She's a good worker but her hygiene is awful. I was legit gagging as I typed that out.

Instead, society should receive special protections from them.

What's the opposite of a protected class?
That's what they should be.

Stopped right there and I’ll vote myself as a-hole of the day here. I have zero sympathy for you.

So you want someone to accommodate you because you/ya’ll made/make poor life choices everyday of your life?

They drive up insurance rates and medical costs for the rest of us so they deserve to be discriminated against.
