Think I’ll hold off on starting at 74 Super Outbreak 50th anniversary thread given tonight’s threat. Not sure if I will get a chance to do so tomorrow, so feel free to start one whenever you’d like.

My parents got trapped in their apartment with those tornados.

I was reading a blog earlier that talked about the growth of the “new” trees in Cherokee Park (large park here in Louisville designed by Frederick Law Olmsted) that were planted in the late 70s to replace all of the trees that were ripped out of the ground during that outbreak.

Really wondering if the greatest tornado risk in Alabama might not end up being over the southern half of the state. The STP from the HRRR provides some indication that could be the case.

@NWSbirmingham has a good thread regarding the rest of the evening. It is seven posts, so I'll share the first and a link.

Thread (1/7): Late afternoon radar and severe weather update...

All of the severe weather so far today has been in states to Alabama's north. Radar currently shows a few showers in central Alabama, with thunderstorms moving across the Tennessee Valley.

Good stuff from NWS Birmingham. Hopefully the shear and instability don’t end up lining up and we can keep things fairly tame tonight.

The NWSBirmingham tweet I just posted goes into this a bit more. It would take the LLJ boosting shear to get it done, but it looks like it will be displaced from the best instability.

Athens, AL warning. Not too far from me, just north. It is the only good looking storm in this part of the risk.

Broad rotation. It actually looked better a couple frames ago.

The rotation isn’t overly impressive at this point.

Yeah, it is broad and really the only threatening looking storm up this way. I've had my eye on it because it has had some rotation for the past 20 minutes or so.
