There are probably multiple reasons behind it, but I suspect a primary one, especially here in the south, is that white people don't want to think of themselves or their ancestors as "bad" people for saying a word that their parents used, their grandparents used, and in some cases they continue to use

They weren’t bad people - the word was accepted back then just like ‘frick’ is accepted everywhere now - frick this, frick that - everything is something ‘AF’ - my grandparents would be slapping everybody

Ah, yes the good ole' why do you care. Because all should be held equally to the same standard.

Why do you care about equality so much with this particular word?

Are you referring to using the N-word?

Well at least she isn’t a teacher she doesn’t even know how to spell. She had two choices on how to spell it and still did it wrong.

No progress can or will ever be made, because a certain does not actually want it made. They enjoy being the victim. and the benefits that come with it.

The problem is you're not making a coherent point and if you answered my line of questions, I'd prove that.

But feel free to avoid answering. Really shows your support of this "argument"

I'll give you it isn't exact, but you most certainly imply that the south if more racist than the north with the words you chose. It's laughably naïve.

I said nothing about racism. I spoke only about the use of the N word - whether casual, serious, whatever. I've lived in Louisiana, California, Texas, Mississippi, and traveled extensively elsewhere. Never been to New England so I have no idea how racist people are up there, or how you measure it. My college roommate was from Boston and was definitely not racist... so there's that.

I haven't taken a poll, but the casual use of the N word, especially when I was a kid, was rampant in Louisiana and Mississippi (my family almost never used it). I literally never heard the word in California or Idaho by adults. Kids, yes. That's my limited experience. If you have any data on the use of the N word, please post it.

Who said it was only about this one word?

Lots of people have brought up that "inequality" directly in this thread. The majority of "yeah buts", I'd imagine.

In white culture it’s a bad word especially when used (as it was in this context) in a hurtful, racist manner “N*ggar (sic ) holiday” isn’t the same as a black guy calling his friend a “dumbass n*gga” or something

Bunch of black dudes using a word spelled differently and used in their culture as a synonym for “bro” isn’t the same. Black people calling other blacks that word aren’t trying to be racist

just because your keyboard ejaculated that response doesn't make you right

You think there is some manner in which calling MLK day N- day can be argued not to be racist?

That word clearly is not considered racist or offensive. It is regularly used by the people it is supposed to offend.

Thank you for going on record as being against equality

Good job arguing dishonestly by removing important context and selectively quoting.

Leftist?

I'm not the one arguing for racist equity like many others in this thread.

Yes.

In 2023, only Leftists are against equality.

Why are you against equality?

Explain yourself, racist.

That was going to be one of my main points before the thread really went off the rails with people TOTALLY not defending racism.

Was the word used in OP intended to be racist? Yes Derogatory? Yes
Insulting? Yes

Does this apply to other uses being cited in this thread? No.

Nope, just stating the truth. If black people found that word to be offensive, they wouldn't use it. Nothing clever about it. Collectively, they clearly do not view it as racist.

I agree, which is why I said "not judging". The word was part of the vernacular at that time. I wouldn't call somebody a bad person " from 50-100 years ago based upon a single word they used, that likely many of their peers used.
