Someone needs to fix the damn autofocus on them telescopes!

I'll give them a pass. The spot in the sky they looked at could be completely blocked from view by a quarter inch ball bearing at the distance of the moon. Besides, the diffraction limit means that's about as good as it's going to get until we get multiple widely separated space telescopes up. The telescope array already had an effective size of the planet and radio telescopes tend to always be diffraction limited.
You need big and I mean BIG telescopes to see small things. It's not a limitation of our technology. It's a hard limit of optical and radio physics.
