The fact he was the head of the Security and Exchange Commission is what made it a scandal. If he were just some unknown hedge fund manager it wouldn't even be news outside of Manhattan.

Asinine. That made it worse, sure. But it was the biggest Ponzi scheme in history.

He stole $20 billion dollars. 1 man stole that much and you think it wouldn’t have been news?!

OK it would have been news for a week or two. It wouldn't have been as big of a story without his resume.

Let me be clear, i'm not taking OP's angle that it was overblown, it wasn't. He straight up ripped people off for billions.

He never actually made any trades, no money was ever invested. He had a legitimate business and an illegitimate one.

The OPs premise is way off when it comes to Bernie.

Bernie Madoff's crime was failing to admit that he wasn't making his clients as much money as he'd said. He didn't just take all their deposits and steal them.

I knew a guy who worked a minimum wage job until the day he died because he lost his entire retirement fund due to the Bernie Madoff scam.

The Notre Dame coach who got canned for making up he played or coached somewhere. The dude who was at Georgia Tech for a while back when they cared about sports.

Gary Hart was a big nothing burger but it changed the way people viewed having a side piece. It was normal back then now you’re a degenerate if you catch some side action on a business trip.
