A 12 oz can of Mountain Dew contains 54 mg of caffeine.

142mg Caffeine in a 16 oz cup of cafe latte from McD's

An 8-12 ounce energy drink has 72-150 mg of caffeine

Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two "energy shot" drinks.

He must've had a pre-existing heart condition.

That sucks. Maybe he had an underlying heart condition.

drank a large diet Mountain Dew, a cafe latte from McDonald's and an energy drink in the two hour period before he collapsed

All this before and during school?

Toothpaste is deadly as well in large quantities. Keep the tube away from pets and kids.

I've regularly taken 750 mg per day in an EC stack for over ten years and no problems. Meh

I wonder if he was also prescribed Adderall, Ritalin, or some other stimulant?
