I say US because if you say America you sound like you either don't know geography, or you're arrogant, and if you say your state and not say US, you sound like you're assuming they're consumed with America, even though a lot of people you meet abroad do have an understanding of many of the different states

I'd say there are some states you can get away with saying:

New York
California
Texas
Florida
Mississippi (for better or worse very well known)

Ones on the cusp:
New Jersey
Ohio
Louisiana
Kentucky
Colorado
Alabama
Massachusetts

The other states though I don't think you can get away with.

Just say the states.

In England they figure it out when you start talking. oh! Are you from Americar?
