With basketball being my favorite sport to play, this is one of my biggest fears. Especially now that I'm over 40 and realize it would be even more difficult to recover.
When I was about 37, I got rushed into a game before warming up and strained my Achilles. It would 'flare up' from time to time after that and eventually someone suggested a 'Foot Rocker' that seemed to help it. I also started those one leg calf raises where you slowly descend from the highest point on your tip toes to even level.
Now, I almost always warm up for a full 20-30 minutes before playing. No pain at moment but it will probably flare up again at some point. I wonder if I did some sort of permanent damage that will always be there.
For those of you that have ruptured, I'm guessing that it may help to continue doing strengthening and flexibility exercises for the rest of your life (even after the PT recovery part of it).

After reading this thread it sounds like the lesson is not to play basketball or soccer

Old boss tore both at same time (playing competition Tennis)
Recovery will be slow and you'll get very discouraged, at times. Do the therapy even when you don't feel up to it, that's 100% correct.
Being in shape and semi-young will help. Best of luck.

6 weeks on crutches, no weight on leg at all then
another 7 weeks walking in a boot
13 weeks total before I could walk like normal again with no help...you'll be on meds in beginning...take them, it will hurt ...your calf will shrink....Will take u plenty of months to rehab but taken ur time and rebuild leg muscles back....I was 28 when I tore mine...however u tore it, stay away from that sport...I tore mine playing a basketball game....I never played competitive basketball again
