I'd use it for HBOGO, Netflix and MLB.tv primarily.
I've had both, the Roku is just fine, I have 2 if em now. I got 2 Roku 2 XDs refurbished for $35 each on either Woot or 1saleaday, can't recall. Just keep an eye out, they pop up about once a month on those daily sites.

I really like our Roku. Chromecast sucks for me. Apple tv is cool for Airplay, but otherwise I think Roku is better (more content)

I love the roku. One thing that is neat about it over the others is a movie search feature that'll find a flick across multiple apps. If for example you search for Turbo, it'll show it available on Vudu, Blockbuster, Netflix, etc. Then you can select which one you want. This is nice feature in action.

App on roku that you can pull files from your computer via.WiFi
I have the roku and its in bed roo. And have got it for a few people last christmas. Easy to use even for old people like my pops. I might get a chromecast but while the streaming is cool thats all I would use it for. I just use my hdmi cord and do the simple laptop stream. It takes all of one second and runs perfect.
Roku cna be had for cheap is why I initially got it 2 years ago.

Is it just files or is it mirroring too?

PLex is a "channel" on roku that lets you stream files from a computer on your wifi network.
Plus plex also has its own "channels" inside it. The MTV channel has hundreds and hundreds of old music videos that are badass (at least to me). Plex also has a south park app with every episode etc etc.
Also roku has a pretty nice android app that let's you control multiple boxes, channel store etc
Tldr
If you've got android, get roku
IPhone get apple TV IMO
