was hard to stand in the batters box facing a dude 6'8" when you had to do a lot of dancing out of the way of those wild pitches.

When he was on he was on, if not, oh lord!

back in the real baw days the pitcher owned the plate, crowd it and take your chances, he may have even made the bigs before they lowered the mound, which would have been worse

No. He didn't need to. That stroke cheated us all though. They had him and N. Ryan at the same time... Holy Cow.

"When he was on, if not..."
Reminds me of another pitcher during that Period. Oil Can Boyd, who had a ton of talent but was a complete head case.

kind of forget the details but wasn't the story that he went to the Astro's docs repeatedly because he was developing weird symptoms, didn't feel right, and they kept telling he's fine, go back to work?

Until 1950, MLB only required that the height of the mound be no more than 15” above the baseline, but did not address a minimum height. This lack of interest in the state of the mound by MLB led to attempts to adjust the height from 0-15 inches to suit the style of individual home team pitchers, or work against the style of visiting pitchers.

“Altering the height of the mound gradually developed into an art form.” [1]

“As a means of utilizing to the full the blinding side-arm speed of Walter Johnson, Washington leveled off the ‘mound’ so completely that it was almost a depression instead of an elevation.” [2]

A lot of good RH hitters suddenly had nagging injuries when it was time to face JR. 95+ fastball, low 90s slider, and wild enough to discourage digging in.
One NL hitter said "He's so tall, by the time he releases the pitch, you can smell his breath".

RIP, Hoss. You were a great one.

I think it was Bob Gibson that scared enough people to make them standardize it?

Yeah, he was complaining about some numbness in his arm
Astros docs either couldn't find anything, or didn't look very hard.

In 1980, he was even better. Richard got the nod on Opening Day against the Dodgers and was perfect through six and a third innings before Rudy Law singled in the seventh. J.R. went eight and struck out 13 before giving way to Joe Sambito who earned his first save.

“It was coming out of a cannon,” said Law. “I’ve never faced anybody who can throw the ball like that, it was unbelievable. He’s one of the greatest pitchers in the major leagues. I don’t look forward to facing too many more like him.”
