It's nice to see tax dollars at work in a meaningful way. I never mind the traffic when it's slowed due to progress.

I moved from New Orleans to Houston a year and a half ago for O&G. I find myself in New Orleans at least once a month if not more. Trying to find work back in the big easy asap.
Not everyone can hack it in the big leagues.

Welcome to Houston. You are never leaving.

Don't knock it unless you've tried it. I am not originally from here and have been in HOU for the last 19 years. It's a good city with a ton to do. City Centre is its own little community adjacent the energy corridor. Maybe live there for 6 months until you really know where you want to live. Otherwise, I second the earlier recommendations of mid-town/Washington areas. The Heights has a lot of good bars and restaurants as well, but I think of that area less for single people.

Agree with Rice Military/Washington Ave area. You can find some great places under your $2000 budget. Some great bars away from the madness of Midtown. Feel like most people I meet/talk to out and about over there are 25-35ish. Reasonable Uber distance from anwhere in the Loop you'd want to go. I hate commuting, so as someone suggested above, I'd try to have easy access to I-10.

City centre is nice and close
Many benefits to the city, give it a year or so to adjust
Inside loop is fun but cinco ranch area is growing and may provide housing appreciation
Do not listen to this advice.
Young and Single is not for Cinco Ranch. I live in that area and it is family oriented.
Living inside the loop and commuting to the Energy corridor shouldn't be bad. You will be going against the majority of the traffic flow. Montrose, Upper Kirby, Washington Avenue will be the most pricey.

District at Washington
I also drove thru different streets in the heights looking at rentals.
Is Washington/Sawyer (where 2411 is) gonna be a rough commute? Will probably go west at 6am and leave corridor by 415.
I currently commute from Metairie to NOLA CBD, so I'm used to 15-20 minute morning and 20-30 minute afternoon drives.

Those jackson hill apartment aren't bad and in a sweet location right on buffalo bayou park.
You will have a lot of good choices at $2000

No, I know a ton of people that do that daily. No traffic on your way in, decent traffic on your way back but not too bad.

Depends on how old you are and what you like to do. Regardless, welcome to Houston

I worked in the BP building on I-10 for 8 years, lived in Cypress near the Champions Golf Course.
Nice area, the commute was 30-45 minutes

Traffic going out west on 10 is a b*tch at 3pm-7pm FYI
basically, have to pay the e-z tag or be in the HOV.

Find a place in Montrose or Heights
Houston is 1000x better than Nola, fyi.
Also do yourself the greatest favor you can, go to Cypress area and eat at restaurant called Peli Peli. It will change your life.
Oh and get the EZ tag ASAP. Don't fight it.

if you are ok with $2000 look at Market Square Tower or the Sovereign.
Apartment towers that I believe are around $1800 a month.
both have great pool decks, less riff raff.

I looked at this a couple years ago and liked it. Complex is probably 3-4 years old if memory serves. For 1-br, probably be best to go for one of these types of complexes, of which there are about a thousand in a 5-mile radius. Also while your price range might bake in some conservatism, you should pretty easily find a 1-br unit at or near 1,000 sq.ft. for closer to 1,500 than 2,000.
And ditto the comment on staying in the loop if you are young and single, as the commute should be tolerable. Also agree with not staying in midtown. For energy corridor, you will likely want to target the exact area you are looking at.

To clarify, I'm 36 but these days, I go out more than I did in my 20s. I'm trying to find the balance between commute and nightlife, so that's how I arrived at Washington area.
