Real Sports

Even though Bryant Gumble is the most bleeding heart liberal I have ever seen on TV, I still watch this show. But last night, the first part of the show was about gamers being addicted. Real Sports was blaming the producers of the game. So really? A guy sits in his room for 20 hours a day and gets dehydrated because he doesn't eat or drink, and it's not HIS fault, it's the guy who created the games fault?
And look, maybe this should be "more sports" or "poli", but it seems like a good OT topic. If I'm wrong, move it or kill it.

Welcome to the world of personal responsibility.

It's not a zero sum game, no pun intended. The ultimate responsibility lies with the individual. At the same time, these games absolutely are designed to be addictive, and aimed at a demographic whose brains are in a stage of development that makes them particularly susceptible.
I see very little positive about video games. My friends took their kid to college orientation last week. One of the very first things the counselors emphasized, to students and parents, was that gaming was by far the biggest time suck on campus. "Students don't go out anymore, they stay in their room and play games."
Some of the biggest swinging dicks in Silicon Valley don't allow their children to have any screen time at all. I wonder why that is?

I read it as "Real Sex".

Bad analogy. Everybody needs shoes. If you made video games I would recognize your legal right to do so while still thinking you were a POS for making a product with very little redeeming value.

people who become addicted or play games hours a day have deeper problems than the games. game addiction is really the symptom not the cause. Blaming producers is just a distraction.

Yes, I know. So in watching what I watched, and my desire to punch someone in the face (albeit I have had a few beers), made me want to post this. Is it not insane? Or just me?

So Real Sports is still pushing a 20 year outdated narrative about Doom and Columbine?

First, we all know game developers do everything they can to make the games addictive. They are also really good at it.
This poses little problem in my mind when it impacts adults, no different from casinos, cigarettes etc. The difference comes when it is a product that is also marketed actively and directly to kids. While the primary responsibility is absolutely on parents the industry has to share in some part of the blame. For me, the worst part of the "system" is the loot box model. This adds in the gambling aspects to the game and adds in another aspect parents must manage beyond just screen time and many are unaware of this until they get stuck with a huge bill.
I have little to no sympathy for adult gamers of which I am one, though casually and sporadically.
