It happens at more places than just WalMart. On top of that you have those cities who don't prosecute for theft under a certain dollar amount. So they just load up their carts and walk out the door.

A certain segment of the population has been doing this a lot lately. There isn't room in the bagging area for more than 20 items, so it's complete chaos watching someone do this.

The Walmart grocery by us has 12 self-checkout stations... you stand in one line and just go to the next available. 8 take cash or card and 4 are card only. Sometimes they also have a human at the center podium who can check you out if you have just a couple of items.
The line - when there actually is a line - moves super fast. The only issue is they nightly empty the cash out of the machines that take cash. The start this process around 7-8 pm so as you get closer to 11 pm close time, only a couple of machines that take cash may be open.
