Why not just place a shock collar on him too. When he breaks the posted speed limit, zap him.

Nope he pays for his own phone and his own radar detector she pays for the car and the insurance. You said she sould be able to say whether or not he is allowed to have a radar detector. Should she be allowed to say whether or not he has a cell phone in the car as well??

As a parent of an 18 year old, ignorance is bliss.

I'm still on my mom's add a line. She tried saying if she was paying for my phone I better answer it

I told her to stop paying it if she wanted to but she wasn't going to manipulate me

But I'm not arguing manipulation, but rather responsibility. She is going to get sued into oblivion if he does something stupid and wrecks. I know there's little control without going overboard, but you bet those facts would be made known and enforced as much as possible. She's the one that stands to lose everything, not the broke college student.

That's your argument for why she shouldn't let her son have a radar detector?

I know that we won't change each other's opinions, but yes. You buy a radar detector to speed and avoid cops, not for safety. I agree that it might help avoid police, but speeding leads to a lack of control over your vehicle unless you're specifically trained to drive at high rates of speed. It is a clear case of cause and effect.

The reality is she knows her son better than we do, and we're both talking based upon our own opinions.

I ask you again. Should she take away his cell phone? Having a cell phone in the car will tempt him to text and drive which is much more dangerous than having a radar detector just so he can drive a few mph over the speed limit.

That's asinine. You can drive without texting and driving and phones provide services necessary and within the law. There is no reason to own a radar detector other than an excuse and motivation to break the law and be a danger to yourself and others.

I would speed even if I didn't own a radar detector. I drive about 1000 miles a week. My chances if getting a ticket are much higher than most people but much lower because I own a radar detector. I don't use it as an excuse or motivation, I use it as protection.

Hey I didn't say he should have one. I just think you say what you can and be done with it

What's she going to do? Go through his car every time he gets home?

Not the point.

You use it as a tool to break the law and there is no other purpose for it.

Bad laws should be broken regularly.

I virtually always drive over the posted speed limit. Oddly enough, there have been no adverse consequences other than traffic tickets for 24 years and counting. Why? Because I pay attention to my surroundings. "Accidents" generally aren't accidental, they happen because someone wasn't paying attention.

Speed itself doesn't cause problems, it reduces reaction time. But if you are paying attention you have plenty of time to avoid trouble. It is absolutely amazing how many people get on a highway and just "zone out".

Your other post was good, too, re. the driving school.

I'm way more alert when I'm running at speed than I am when just loafing. Even then, I still know what's going on.

Plus, as an adult paying my own way, I do WTF I want.
Junior there hasn't earned that right.
