There's your leverage if you disagree with it. Now it becomes an actual demand you make and not a request. Cut them apron strings.

He may argue with you, but even an 18 year old understands those dollar signs, especially when it comes to car insurance.

if your 18 year old son wants to buy a radar detector with his own money more why would you care?

I would be worried about him using the money to buy an 8 ball or something that could really mess up his life.

Pick your battles, if you try to control an 18 year old he's going to completely shut you out.

If she's paying his insurance, it's in her best interest to exert some form of control over his driving habits. You don't buy a radar protection because you like the pretty lights and noises.
