I paid a few 100k over for my AMC Pacer just because I really didn't need the money

I don't have a car that cost 6 figures, but it was close (late 20's, no kids, not married yet, good job, so wtf else am I going to spend my money on). You can't really haggle because there isn't a lot of leverage. Cars like that are rare, and the buyer either really wants that particular type of vehicle or they don't. Both you and the dealer know that it took awhile for you to even find that vehicle, with those specs. You're going to have to drive to another state if you want to compare a similar vehicle.

That being said, I straight up made an offer on it that was below the listed price. There wasn't really a haggle. Told him that i'd love to have it and I think what I offered was fair. I said "if you want to sell it, I'll write you a check right now for the price (I had already been approved at my bank). Not sure how long it had been there, but he took the offer. There are a lot of factors that come into play. It helps if you know a lot about the car.

not necessarily true when buying something like that from an individual, it's usually harder to sell something that(boats too,) after a while the seller gets motivated, wants to get rid of it, out from under the note, wants to upgrade, is over extended and need to unload, etc., and those factors can vary daily, good timing helps

With the 351?? That's a bucket list car for me... once I sell my special edition yugo(racing stripe) it's either the gremlin or Toyota tercel

Well when I said that about leverage I was referring to how bad I wanted that particular car, with those features/motor etc. In general if you are determined to have the car, you're f'd when it comes to haggling. If you're not willing to walk away and not buy the car, you don't have much leverage. We both knew I wasn't going to drive 5 hours to look at anothermodel with the exact specs I wanted. You're right though that a seller can be motivated to move it if they've had it awhile.

sidenote: I dont think he took me seriously because I was a young buyer (this was 2 years ago when I was mid 20's) . I got this vibe that he was like "yeah I'm sure you're really interested bro." It's like he sort of called my bluff by accepting my offer, thinking I couldn't afford it. Again, there are a lot of factors that come into play.

If I can give you any advice its lease it do not buy it. I have had a few cars well north of $100k and I learned the hard way how illiquid they are. When it comes time to sell it, you cant just post it on ebay or craigslist or something and whatever dealer you try to trade it in at will destroy you because they have to make alot of money tie up their capital and take on that risk.

I also suggest leasing a one year old of whatever you want. I just got a car in february where the 2015 they were doing a lease special where they were trying to unload inventory and I go it for $60,000 off sticker and it included $20,000 cash from the manufacturer. That tells you right there how illiquid these things are.

Other than Ferrari, all the others lamborghini, rolls royce, etc you can get solid lease for 5000 miles a year for $20-25k down and $2500/mo or less. Rolls Royce even has some ghosts/wraiths you can get sub $2000/mon with $20k+ tax down......those are $300k+ cars just google rolls royce lease specials. I just looked at rolls royce, lamborghini, and a few others before finally picking one but I went with a lease and Id never buy a car like that again. Certain models appreciate, most do not, and they're a very tough sell on the secondary market. Leasing is 100x easier.

For the record another car I bought around the time I bought bc I feel it will appreciate, but that was a couple years older, the newer one I got I leased.

Once you get into a certain price range or type of vehicle, do you just pay the dealership sticker price or are you able to negotiate?

Very little if any negotiations on high demand cars, often there us a wait list....especially new.

Yeah, mostly dealers in that mag. the key with exotics is documentation and meticulous service history

How do you lease though if you're not getting from a dealer? I looked around for a while and found a private seller. The car I bought was 1 year old at the time of purchase.

I've also seen that after taxes and fees you get f'd when leasing cars that are over a certain amount.

Pecker look at this link just pulled off a google search

LINK

2016 rolls royce ghost, already going way below sticker, they start over $300 and can easily do $400K. The lease is $30,000 down + $1795/mo for 48 months

Total lease cost you $116,000, not bad, you think you're gonna sell that car for $170k when its 4 years old??? You're not and even if you could good luck selling that used. When I sold my used cars it was a pain everyone wanted a test drive, everyone wanted me to owner finance, and in the end consignments cost me way too much. Id rather pay $116,000 for 4 years of ownership which is actually less than depreciation without tying up the capital and then give them the keys and move on to my next car. I have a car I drive to work and I have another weekend car a classic so for a newer exotic 2500 miles a year is fine. Lamborghini has the same lease.

Not true. If you're on a waiting list for a Ferrari you aren't going to be able to negotiate a lower price.

Exactly. Ferrari has even threatened people on their waiting list to add more options or lose their spot.

As a result, some buyers who've already placed their orders are reportedly being "advised" to add on extra options or risk losing their place on the waiting list to someone who will.
