I used to work for one of these companies, and, believe me, if there was any potential threat of a lawsuit because of the title "Project/Field Engineer", the job title would be renamed.

LAPELS is a governmental agency tied to the Secretary of State's office. By legislation, they have the right to levy fines for misrepresentation of professional licensure as it relates to Engineering and Surveying.

So, by definition presenting yourself as an "Engineer" in a public context is, in fact, illegal and can be sanctioned through fines regardless of a firm's/buisness' intent to get licensed. Throwing in "criminal" is semantics.........

An "engineer" just can't present himself to the public for work as an Engineer.

We have a shitton of engineers without PE licenses. Though technically to LAPELS, their work has to be supervised under a PE.

...fricking contractors....

Like I said earlier, 99% of the time the board won't actively pursue such issues. It's not deemed critical unless a professional seal is involved. BUT, the law states what the law states.

I've cited it earlier. Is what it is.

While I do respect CM grads, you don't deserve to affiliate yourself with the engineering term because you didn't follow a course load anywhere close to what the CEs do.

And the gap between CE and ME/EE/PE is about the same, so what does that make us?

Don't get so defensive about the title dude, "engineer" is slapped onto a lot of job descriptions these days.
